Students Swing Like the Pros

Just in time for Phillies fever, 6ABC brought a pro pitching simulator for a demonstration.

Baseball fans swung for the fences Thursday, Oct. 29 on Main Campus – the virtual ones, that is.

They may not have been able to launch a ball down Liacouras Walk or onto Broad Street, but batters had the chance to swing at high-speed pitches from a virtual player in a state-of-the-art pitching simulator.

The ProBatter Professional PX2 simulator was set up outside of Maxi’s and 7-Eleven on Liacouras Walk for three hours.

The self-contained unit measures a massive 80 feet by 20 feet and was brought to campus in the spirit of the Phillies’ World Series appearance through sponsorship by local television station 6ABC.
Many students, however, had no idea the simulator was coming to campus.

“At first I thought it was a moon bounce, but I was excited to see a batting cage,” senior natural sciences major Garry Cole said.

ProBatter Representative Adam Battersby said the company’s public relations firm pitches potential demos to media outlets during the times around Opening Day and the MLB postseason. This postseason alone, the simulator has been to 10 locations – Thursday’s appearance at Temple was its fourth in the Delaware Valley.

“It’s a fun, basic entertainment machine,” Battersby said.

But ProBatter simulators can be anything but basic. The systems, used by MLB teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, can throw faster than 100 mph and can be adjusted to throw different types of pitches.

“This simulator can pitch at speeds up to 90 mph, but we’ll keep it around 65 [mph] today,” Battersby said.

Matt O’Donnell from Action News was the first to step up to the plate.

O’Donnell swung and missed the first three, finally making a connection on the fourth pitch. On the seventh pitch, he made a hit that would have likely hit Annenberg Hall had safety nets not been set up along Liacouras Walk.

The segment was taped for a portion of Friday’s morning newscast.

O’Donnell joked with the crowd of students, “Who’s going to be the first to hit one into Mr. Dickinson’s science lab?” after a ball escaped through a hole in the netting.

Temple senior Garry Cole was the first student to step into the batter’s box.

“It’s different than a batting cage because of the video screen,” Cole said of his experience. The 8-by-10-foot projection screen displays a high quality image of a pitcher winding up, as a ball is thrown from a hole matching up to the pitchers’ release point.

“I didn’t know what to expect. It threw all strikes and was very realistic,” senior Hebrew major Ari Charlestein said.

Charlestein, who was decked in Phillies gear head-to-toe, said he hasn’t played organized baseball in a while.

“The best part is,” he said, “it’s fun and free.”

The Phillies Win It Again! Wait, What?!

Whoops! The Philadelphia Inquirer ran this Macy’s ad in Monday’s edition, congratulating the Phillies on a repeat World Series Title. However, as baseball fans know, the Phillies trail the Yankees, 3-1 in the series.

Way to go Inky. Some believe it’s Harry the K’s way of telling us to keep our hopes high. Others credit terrible editing.

The Associated Press reports that the newspaper has apologized to readers for the error.

Philly State of Mind

The 2009 World Series, between the Yankees and the hometown Fightin’ Phils, begins Wednesday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The reigning World Champs will try to steal the hopes of a 27th championship from the Pinstripes, to make this city’s dreams of a REPEAT come true … Neeko’s already stolen Jay-Z’s ‘New York State of Mind’ and made it the City of Brotherly Love’s. Take a look below…

Lyrics:

“yeah im talkin b hop

(chorus)
In philly

but we still got the roots
plus we got beans
and an eve that doesnt opt for fruit
green blood in the tube

and if youve never been here

(chorus)

now that we got vick

more like the best of

‘Today’ Show’s Matt Lauer Comes to Temple

mattmatt

Matt Lauer, co-host of NBC’s ‘Today,’ spoke in the School of Communications and Theater Tuesday. The charismatic host had a busy day; he appeared on the nation’s top rated morning show and then came to Temple to accept the Lew Klein ‘Excellence in Media’ Award at a ceremony in Mitten Hall. Lauer was also the keynote speaker for the event. He then generously agreed to talk to an atrium full of students in Annenberg Hall. The 45-minute Q&A session began with a brief introduction by Lauer and a joke that he had stopped for a beer at Maxi’s on Liacouras Walk. During the session, nothing was off limits. He talked about getting his first job, interviewing pop culture icons, the importance of developing yourself as a marketable journalist, and of course, his 16 years with ‘Today.’

The Iconic ‘Rocky’ Run

mdwartsteps

A few weeks ago, after a trip to the zoo, I made the iconic run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art just like Rocky, in the famous movies filmed in Philadelphia. It’s 72 steps to the top, and once you’re there, two fist pumps will do.

NLDS Game 3: Snowed Out in October?

Let’s face it … If Coors Field had temperature-activated mountains on its facade, they’d be blue. Game 3 of the NLDS in Denver has been postponed until Sunday at 8 p.m. due to snow, record-low temperatures and just outright middle-of-winter weather conditions.

NLDS Game 1: UnbeLEEvable

Pitcher Cliff Lee controlled the mound for all nine innings Wednesday afternoon, as the Phillies rocked the Colorado Rockies, 5-1. The only other element that controlled more of the game than Lee, was the wind at Citizens Bank Park. The two teams will play Thursday in Game 2 action at the “Bank.” The Fightin’ Phils lead the series 1-0.

Yo Murph!: My (Early) Morning at 6ABC

davidmurphy

Thursday was an early morning…a very early morning (at least for your average college student). The alarm buzzed at 4:30 a.m. sharp. I was headed to 6ABC on City Avenue for the morning Action News broadcast. A few months back I started contacting David Murphy, the show’s meteorologist, about his career and maybe coming in to check out the station. David, being a Temple alum and a great guy, generously agreed.

I was very eager to visit the newly christened, state-of-the-art studios, which opened about a week ago. The place is truly amazing with the vast amount of great technology. I drove in for the 6 o’clock hour of the morning show and stayed through the last cut-in just before Live with Regis and Kelly. It was an energizing experience; standing right next to Dave as he did his weather reports, chatting with the camera operator, and just getting to know Matt, Nydia, and Karen throughout the morning. Of course, I got the grand tour and had plenty of time to talk with Dave about his truly interesting career path. His career started out at WFMZ in Allentown, PA (just north of where I grew up) and he his currently fulfilling his life dream of returning to his hometown of Philadelphia and 6ABC.

The morning team is great, and I felt very welcomed at the area’s top news station.
